Biomedical
Sciences Exchange Program between North America and Europe
Inc.
To
promote leadership in biomedical and health sciences
The
BMEP was established in 1979 by John Boylan, M.D.. University
of Connecticut. Medical School, Farmington, and Hilmar Stolte,
M.D., Medizinische Hochschule Hannover.
Since
the beginning of 1991, with the changing political scene
in Europe, the whole program has been broadened to include
universities in other countries of Europe.
MISSION
To
maintain and expand a scientific and educational exchange
program between North America and Europe, especially to
foster academic careers in Biomedicine.
To
promote the exchange of technology between academia and
industry. Therefore industry-university relationships in
the area of post-graduate training will be fostered and
encouraged.
CURRENT
SUCCESS
The
BMEP owes its success to the idea of matching individual
students and young research scientists in Biomedicine and
affiliated professions with selected senior professionals
sharing compatible interests in their exchange country.
Participants: Total as of 2007 ca. 1250 and ca. 20 each
year.
ACTIVITIES
- The
Academic Year Program gives students the possibility of
taking part in projects in their field of research (4-6
months), and of participating in internships or clinical
rotations (3-4 months)
- Students
participate in three month internships in the biomedical
educational setting of the host country.
- The
Technology Transfer Trainee Program gives graduates and
postgraduates, as well as research fellows, the possibility
to spend time in their respective field in R&D of
industry and in biomedical research institutions of academia.
- This
extension of the BMEP includes members of other health
related professions, e.g. nursing, medical technology,
logopaedics.
- The
involvement of faculty and the interest of members of
academic administration have fostered symposia on topics
such as "Research Animals and Concepts of Applicability
of Clinical Medicine", "University-Corporate
Relationships in the Biomedical Sciences for the '80's
and '90's". The Role of Bioethical Issues in Academia,
Industry and Public Opinion", "University -
Industrial Relationships in the 90's: Reflections on Opportunities
and Barriers in Biomedical Research".
BUDGET
Estimated
yearly financial volume: $US 250.000 by means of Fellowships
by organizations such as the DAAD (German Academic Exchange
Service), Deutsche Studienstiftung, Boehringer Ingelheim Fond, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung,
Konrad Adenauer Stiftung plus tuition
waiver and participant's own contribution.
