| Prof. Roland Hetzer, M.D., Ph.D., is Chairman and Head of Surgery at the German Heart Center, Berlin. He is also Professor of Surgery at the Free University of Berlin and Professor of Surgery at the Humboldt University, Berlin. Prior to his posts in Berlin, he was Associate Professor of Surgery at Hannover Medical School, where he also initiated and directed the Heart Transplant Program. Prof. Hetzer studied Medicine in Germany and the USA and holds M.D. and Ph.D. qualifications from the University of Munich. He also holds an Honorary Professorship from Shanghai Second Medical University, as well as Honorary Doctorates from the University of Fujian, the Kardinal-Stefan-Wyszynski University of Warsaw, the University of Sarajevo, Burdenko Academy in Voronech, Pirogov Center in Moscow, Nikiforov Medical Center in St. Petersburg and the State University of Moscow Lomonosov. He was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin in 1987 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1995. |
