(PDF-256KB)

1. Individual projects

• BMEP “Biomedical Sciences Exchange Program between North America and Europe BMEP Inc.”
The exchange program was initiated in 1979 and became a special partner of the GWT (Reg. Ass.), now the IALS (Reg. Ass.), through the Biomedical Network Europe (BMNE) in 1992. It serves to promote the progress of young scientific academics and technology transfer by allocating places at universities and research institutes (approx. 30 participants p.a.) and conducting workshops. Since 1990 it has been a non-profit organization in the USA (BMEP Inc.) and a cooperation partner of the IALS (Reg. Ass.) in Europe. In 1996, the Berlin Biomedical Exchange Office (BBEO) was opened as a partner of the medical faculties at the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Public Health Cooperation at the Technical University of Berlin. It is also a partner of the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin-Buch.

“ZT Biomedizin – Zentrum Technologietransfer Biomedizin Bad Oeynhausen GmbH” (Bad Oeynhausen Center for Technology Transfer in Biomedicine)
The Center promotes cooperation between science, research and industry within the fields of biomedicine and health in the East-Westphalian region. It is a partner of the University of Bielefeld. In 1991/2 a new Center building was erected, with 2400 m2 of available floor space for – at present – 18 small companies. Their main areas of focus are: biotechnology, medical technology, computer science in medicine, pharmacology, etc. In 2001 the Center was taken over by the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, Bad Oeynhausen.

The company and its Foundation provide services ranging from chemical and physical analyses to the sanitation of contaminated ground, refuse tips and industrial plants.

• “SysTA Biomed – Institut für System- und Technologieanalysen der GBM mbH” (GBM Institute for Systems and Technological Analyses)
A spin-off from ZT Biomedizin and since 1992 affiliated to GBM mbH. Its main areas of focus are: technology assessment in biomedicine, molecular epidemiology and in vitro pharmacotoxicology.

“Biotechnikum an der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald, Mecklenburg/Vorpommern” (Biotechnical Institute at the University of Greifswald in Mecklenburg - West Pomerania)
Conceptional drafting and realization with a focus on application-oriented research and development in the biomedical sciences. In close association with the medical and scientific faculties of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald. Founded in 1996.

“Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals Online Community”
PlantPharma.org is an online community dedicated to a science-based, medically-oriented public dialog on plant-made pharmaceuticals and their potential to help combat life-threatening illnesses. This community is a project of the International Academy of Life Sciences, a global network of universities, medical schools and related institutions that are dedicated to education, training and research in key issues associated with the life sciences. Our PlantPharma.org project is exploring the related life sciences area of plant-made pharmaceuticals through informed dialog and information-sharing among interested stakeholders. (2002-2007) (see PlantPharma.org)

Peking

IMNC-International Medical Network Center – St. Petersburg”
The IALS initiative "IMNC-International Medical Network Center – St. Petersburg" is about to be realized, with a first exchange of advanced students and young scientists from Germany going to institutions in St. Petersburg and vice versa for specialized training within certain areas of bioinformatics and eHealth in the study fields pediatric oncology and pediatric cardiology.
This project will also witness the establishment of an international medical center with a special focus on medical diagnostics, clinical genomics and medical imaging.
The IMNC cooperation partners are:
IALS Life Sciences University Network
• Institute for Experimental Medicine RAMS, Department of Molecular Genetics
• St. Petersburg Pediatric Medical Academy, Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology
* Supported by B.Braun Melsungen (s. Fellowship-Program)

“Outcome Study - BMEP 30 Years”
This study will provide detailed information about the expectations of young German scientists who have completed part of their academic education abroad. With more than 1500 BMEP participants in total, 680 of these in the so-called "Academic Year Program", this Life Sciences collective is unique in Germany and an excellent basis for study.
The general aim of this study is to prove that international education and training, mobility, intercultural experiences and interdisciplinary expertise all benefit later career paths. This is especially positive with regard to global careers and leadership qualities.
Supported by the Else Kroener-Fresenius-Stiftung.
Work has commenced in Fall 2009.

“Engineering Life” (An Analysis of the legal Framework)
The goal of the sub-project is to analyze and evaluate the current legal framework surrounding synthetic biology in Germany and the EU.

The project will compile a comprehensive collection of legal regulations that apply to synthetic biology research in Germany (comprising regulations in all fields of legal provisions currently applicable to synthetic biology). Using different realistic future scenarios, the legal status quo will be evaluated and possible regulatory desiderata identified. Furthermore, recommendations for activities and regulations for national legislation, as well as the international level, will be developed. Thus, the project will supply a comprehensive basis for further decision-making in politics. For the practice of synthetic biology, the intention is to develop a quasi guideline or compendium of political action and compliance (informed consent) on the basis of these results.

Supported by the BMBF/DLR (2010-2012) to Dr. Rainer Paslack
